An exceptionally rare pair of sculptural wingback lounge chairs designed by Edward Wormley for Dunbar, circa 1950s. Among Wormley’s more dramatic seating designs, the chairs feature soaring, gracefully curved backs that wrap forward to form distinctive winged profiles, balanced by slender tapered legs and a gently arched front rail.
The pair has been meticulously restored while preserving the integrity of Wormley’s original design. The frames have been professionally rebuilt with new springs and foam, and the removable seat cushions are luxuriously down-filled. The exposed bases have been refinished in their original deep espresso-toned satin lacquer.
Of particular note is the extraordinary upholstery: a custom Pierre Frey textile produced exclusively for Cartier. The fabric has a beautifully mottled, almost painterly surface in shades of champagne, taupe, bronze and soft gold. Its subtle luster shifts considerably with the angle of view and changing light, giving the chairs a remarkably rich and dimensional appearance that is considerably more nuanced in person than photographs can convey.
The combination of Wormley’s architectural silhouette and the luminous Cartier textile transforms this rare Dunbar pair into exceptionally glamorous statement chairs. Their tall, enveloping profiles make them equally compelling viewed from the front, side or back and particularly well suited to an important living room, library, bedroom or sophisticated hospitality interior.
