An early and exceptionally refined maple credenza designed by Florence Knoll for Knoll International, circa 1950s. A superb example of Knoll’s architectural approach to furniture design, the credenza combines a beautifully figured maple case with oak drawer interiors, hand-stitched natural leather pulls and a remarkably slender satin-finished steel base. The restrained exterior conceals a highly functional interior with adjustable shelving, storage compartments and a bank of four beautifully constructed drawers. Particularly noteworthy are the sculpted drawer sides and exposed oak interiors, details that demonstrate the quality of construction found in these early Knoll pieces. Original leather pulls and hardware remain intact, including the original lock and key.
The cabinet is finished on the back in beautifully matched maple veneer, allowing it to be freestanding and viewed from all sides—an important feature for use in an open-plan interior or architect-designed home. The juxtaposition of warm maple, natural leather and precisely fabricated steel exemplifies Florence Knoll’s ability to translate the vocabulary of modern architecture into exceptionally elegant furniture. In excellent vintage condition with a beautifully preserved original appearance. An increasingly difficult-to-find early example of one of Florence Knoll’s most enduring case designs.
