Description
An exceptional and highly collectible three-piece sectional sofa designed by Paul McCobb for his celebrated Symmetric Group line in the 1950s. This rare modular example embodies McCobb’s disciplined approach to proportion, clarity, and architectural balance—hallmarks that established him as one of the most influential figures in American mid-century modern design.
The sectional’s low, linear silhouette is elevated on solid walnut legs, creating a striking visual lightness while grounding the composition in warmth and material integrity. The rich black chenille upholstery provides a sophisticated, textural depth that enhances the sofa’s crisp geometry and highlights the sculptural quality of the three modular components. The contrast between the tailored upholstery and the exposed walnut base elements exemplifies McCobb’s refined modernist sensibility.
Built with traditional hand-tied spring construction, the seating offers enduring comfort and structural excellence consistent with the high manufacturing standards of American furniture in the postwar period. The modular configuration allows for flexibility in placement while maintaining the balanced symmetry that defines the Symmetric Group aesthetic.
Both elegant and architectural, this sectional represents an increasingly scarce opportunity to acquire a significant example of 1950s American modernism—ideal for collectors seeking authentic Paul McCobb design, designers curating museum-quality interiors, or discerning buyers searching for a statement mid-century sectional sofa with impeccable pedigree. This sofa was personally selected by Paul McCobb for a law firm interior he designed near Wichita, Kansas, further underscoring its authenticity and documented provenance. The original brass cigarette tables and leather armchairs specified for the same installation are also available separately, offering a rare opportunity to recreate the complete ensemble as originally conceived.
Previously restored and presenting in very good vintage condition. The black chenille upholstery shows a few subtle, minor impressions consistent with age and gentle use. The cushions have been updated with resilient foam to ensure lasting comfort and support. The upper horizontal piece above the channelled back features a concealed foam strip that has slightly firmed over time; it does not impact seating comfort or contact the body when seated. The solid walnut legs have been professionally refinished and display beautifully.
