Poul Henningsen first developed his revolutionary three-shade system in 1925–1926, with the earliest examples created for an exhibition in Paris. From that moment forward, his collaboration with Louis Poulsen continued until his death in 1967. Throughout his career, Henningsen remained singularly focused on perfecting illumination—seeking to eliminate glare, direct light precisely where it was needed, and create soft, atmospheric shadows using the incandescent bulb as his source.
Building on the original three-shade concept, the four-shade system was introduced in 1931 as an alternative to traditional chandeliers, specifically engineered for mounting at greater heights. By increasing horizontal light distribution, the design provided superior illumination of walls and architectural surfaces—an innovation particularly suited to large interiors and public spaces. Though removed from the standard Louis Poulsen range in the 1940s, the concept was revived and thoughtfully reinterpreted in 1979 by Danish architects Sophus Frandsen and Ebbe Christensen for the Charlottenborg exhibition building in Copenhagen. Their redesign, executed in a larger scale (PH 6½/6), introduced a small blue inner shade to further combat glare and incorporated a matte white painted finish to create a softer, more even quality of light—ideal for museums, galleries, and rooms with high ceilings. A smaller 5/4½ version followed in 1984 for the Aarhus Concert Hall. The PH-6 Maxi reflects this lineage of technical refinement and sculptural clarity. Its tiered shade configuration distributes light both downward and horizontally, producing a balanced, comfortable glow without visual harshness. Architectural in scale and presence, it serves beautifully over dining tables, conference tables, entry halls, or in expansive interiors where both performance and design integrity are paramount.
